Testimony of Franck
Franck, a merchandiser in the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region, has agreed to talk about his experience as a disabled worker in a very moving video. His unvarnished account reminds us of the difficulties that disabled people face on a daily basis in the world of work.
However, in France, the law requires companies with more than 20 employees to have at least 6% disabled workers in their workforce. Despite this legal obligation, it has to be said that integrating disabled people into the workplace remains complicated.
Integration still faces many obstacles
In 2021, only 3.5% of private sector employees were recognised as disabled according to Agefiph. It doesn't add up.
Disabled employees are often the victims of negative preconceptions and suffer a form of rejection and exclusion from their able-bodied colleagues. They are criticised for lower productivity, more frequent absences for medical reasons, or a lack of adaptability.
However, disability in no way defines an employee's skills! A disabled worker who works in a caring and understanding environment often demonstrates exemplary motivation.
Simple solutions for better integration
There are still many obstacles:
- Premises sometimes unsuitable for wheelchairs in the case of motor disabilities
- Work tools that do not take certain disabilities into account
- Lack of awareness among teams
- The persistence of negative preconceptions
And yet it often takes very little to improve the integration of people with disabilities!
- Making offices accessible
- Provide adapted equipment or furniture: dedicated software, headphones, etc.
- Authorise teleworking to reduce the need for complicated journeys
- Raising team awareness through training
By taking everyone's specific needs into account, it is entirely possible to build an inclusive working environment that is a source of collective enrichment.
The RQTH, a key stage in claiming your rights
Get a Recognition of Disabled Worker Status (RQTH) is an important step. This voluntary approach enables disabled people to assert their rights, both to find a job and to progress within their company.
The RQTH gives you access to specific assistance to help you find a job or set up your own business. It is also a way of making your employer aware of your situation by reminding them of their legal obligations.
In 2021, according to the French Ministry of Labour, almost 1.2 million people were entitled to the RQTH. But there are certainly many more who are eligible. So if this applies to you, don't hesitate to take the necessary steps!
